News - Leek Federation Sixth Form New York visit.

NY 2015 1During February, nearly 60 participants from across the Leek Federation Sixth Form took an annual bite out of ‘The Big Apple’. This is the ninth year the trip has taken place; giving students an awe-inspiring experience of the sights, sounds and flavours of one of the world’s most famous cities.

The five day trip contained a diverse itinerary including all of the most famous destinations, together with a few lesser-known gems. From standing at the top of the Empire State building, to navigating the depths of the subway system; striding across the Brooklyn Bridge for an award-winning hot chocolate and a breath-taking panoramic skyline view of the city,  to leisurely strolling through the poetic Central Park; taking a moment to reflect on the events of 9/11 at the recently opened memorial museum, to being able to appreciate a piece of artwork… and then of course there was Mr. Edwards informing students of the different TV shows and movies which were filmed at various locations around the city.

This year saw some of the coldest weather the group has ever experienced during the trip, with temperatures at times reaching as low as -19 before considering the ‘wind-chill NY 2015factor’!   However, all of the students were very well prepared, taking it in their stride and not once allowing the elements get in the way of making sure they made the most of their time in ‘the city that never sleeps’.

Dan Owen, Director of the Leek Federation Sixth Form: ‘One of the highlights for me, each and every year, is seeing the students’ expression when they first step off the coach. After a long journey it is amazing to see their eyes light up and feel the instant buzz of energy amongst them as they take in the sheer size and scale of their surroundings. That very first moment always brings a smile to my face.’

Mr Owen would like to thank Mrs. Ackerly, Mrs. Baker, Mr. Edwards, Mrs. Emery, Miss. McNeil, Mrs. Stoddard and of course all of the students who made this a truly unforgettable trip!
