News - Space Balloon Project

On 24th May 2013 a team of science students from Westwood College launched a Helium filled balloon from the college playing fields. The balloon was carrying a GPS and 2 cameras. The objectives of this ambitious project was to take pictures of space, and pictures of the Earth from the stratosphere.

Balloon Facts

The balloon reached an estimated height of 16-18kmIMG_4508

It travelled a distance of 200miles and was picked up from a farm near Lyme Regis!

It travelled at an average speed of over 50 mph.

A Successful Flight

The balloon took video footage from Leek to Dorset for 3 hours before the batteries in the camera ran out. One camera failed, so unfortunately we got no pictures of space, but we plan to re-launch another balloon using what we’ve learnt from the first mission.
