News - Textile Piece

The attached are photographs of a selection of pieces that have been submitted for the Jane Barr Memorial Textile Piece.  These are 2 of the eighty two that have already been received. The range of techniques and interpretations is remarkable and beautifully reflects the versatility of the textile medium that never failed to excite Jane. What has also been touching is the written sentiments that have accompanied the textiles, mentioning dates taught, inspirations, techniques and memories.

The fabric packs are still being requested, which is marvellous, and over 200 have been distributed already, not only in the locality, but internationally, with packs send out to France, and one received from Italy!!!!

In light of this overwhelming response to the project, we have decided to extend the deadline until the end of March as we wish to encourage as many participants as possible to return their pieces, in order for the piece to be as inclusive as possible.

The overall design is being overseen by internationally renowned textile artist, Alice Kettle and facilitated by Jane Clowes, who Alice taught whilst studying her Masters in Textiles at Manchester Metropolitan University. Alice has also created a textile piece that will be displayed alongside the large scale textile, as will a piece by a second international textile Artist, Shelly Goldsmith. Both Artists were personal friends of Jane and had visited Westwood College, giving talks and workshops to staff and students. Giving their inclusion in the project a personal resonance.

When all the submissions have been received and the piece assembled, it will be displayed in New Hall at Westwood College and there will be an opening event to celebrate.

Please send your pieces in to Jane Clowes or Alan Barr at Westwood College and we look forward to receiving them by the end of March. Get creating….
