News - Westwood College Book Launch

About one hundred people were at Westwood College for the launch of a new book about Westwood Hall Girls’ High School. The joint authors of the book, Anne & Brian Lewis, were both pupils at Leek’s Grammar Schools in the late 1940s & early 50s. The book traces the origins of the school from the Church school in the Maud Institute to its transfer to the isolated manor house buildings to the west of the town. For over six decades secondary education was provided for about three thousand girls and a few boys in this school. The book is not just a factual account of the school’s development but also a treasury of the memories of former pupils and staff.

Many of those who contributed to the book were present at the launch were able to reminisce about times past as they sat in the old hall or revisited old classrooms or walked in the sunny grounds. There were two old girls present,on their first visit for over seventy years, who could recall the days of the first headmistress, Miss de Sausmarez.
