News - Westwood contention for Under 14 Cricket County Cup

Having beaten Denstone College in the first round of the Under 14 Cricket County Cup, Westwood’s opponents, Walton High, were going to prove a difficult challenge.

Westwood batted first and started brightly with an opening partnership of 26 before Connor Ball (10) fell to a catch at mid-on. His opening partner, Ben Turner, continued his good start and made an excellent contribution of 33 runs before being run out.

Kieran Smith (18) and James Hollins (12) were the only other two to score double figures, whilst the rest chipped in with vital runs, raising the score to 92-7 from 20 overs.

Walton’s batting line up consisted of two county players, both players contributed well to the run chase.   Outstanding fielding from James Hollins and a spectacular one-hand diving catch from Kieran Smith, bowled by Callum Bell, could not prevent Walton from knocking off the score with a loss of only three wickets, having four overs to spare.

Congratulations to the team for their commendable effort and sportsmanship.
