News - Westwood Year 10 boys rounders success at Staffordshire Schools Games.

Westwood College’s Year 10 boys rounders team represented Staffordshire Moorlands in the Staffordshire School Games which was held on Friday 20 June.  The team consisted of Jack Plant (captain), Jack Shepherdson, Declan Heath, Sam Slater, Josh Robinson, Joe Priestman, Kieran Carr, Jack Robinson, Adam Stevenson and Ben Podmore. School Games June 2014

The event was also attended by students from St. Edwards, Horton and Leek First School and included hockey and netball fixtures.

The Westwood team was in a group of four for the first stages of the competition, narrowly losing the initial game which proved to be a very even match.  However, excellent decision making and risk taking by Jack Robinson allowed the team to win the second game on the last ball, captain Jack Plant displaying outstanding fielding. In addition, Josh Robinson and Jack Shepherdson each secured a brilliant catch to further support the win.

At the end of the group stages, progression to the semi-finals was very closely contested between three teams. However, due to rounders difference and fair play awards, Westwood advanced to the semi-finals.  Following a valiant effort, the team were defeated, gaining a respectable third place overall.

The team then decided to try their talents on an inflatable assault course, this being equally competitive as the rounders!

The Westwood students should be commended for the way in which they interacted with some of the younger students, even racing against them through the assault course.

St Edwards were competing in the hockey event, winning their semi-finals and gaining third place in a very competitive 5-5 draw followed by a penalty shoot-out moving finally into sudden death penalties.

Congratulations to the Westwood team for their excellent conduct and sporting achievement.
