News - Achieving a Record Level of Performance

Following on from many years as one of Staffordshire’s best performing Sixth Forms, where young people of all abilities flourish, our students can celebrate yet another year of outstanding results.

2011 sees a continuation of the excellent set of results achieved by our students over the last few years. The hard work, determination and high aspirations of our students, their families and our staff at Westwood has been rewarded with some excellent performances on our Level 3 courses. A total of 52% of all students achieved passes at A* to B grade. These are the best results ever achieved in the 90 year history of Westwood College.

This year’s results are clearly excellent, with students achieving high levels of performance. The results at Grade A*, A & B were excellent across all subject areas but were particularly good in Art (100%), Design (80%), English Language (77%), French (75%), Geography (70%), German (73.7%), Mathematics (70%), Further Maths (67%), Physics (60%), and RE (88%).

Overall 6% of all subject entries were awarded an A* grade. There were notable performances at A* level with 50% of Art students, 17% of Psychology students and 17% of Further Maths students achieving A* grades.

The results on our Level 3 Vocational courses were similarly impressive with a 100% pass rate in all subjects.

Congratulations to the following ‘A’ Level students who achieved the grades indicated: Daniel Brookes (A*A*A*A*), Samuel Brownsword (A* AA B), Alexander Burns (A*A*A*), Jo Collins (A*A*A*A), Flora Cresswell (A*AAB), David Haigh (A*AA), Elizabeth Hine (A*A*A), Callum O’Donnell (AAAB), Samuel Parker (A*A*A*A), Michelle Riley (A*A*AA), Miles Smith (AAAE) and Eric Stonehewer (AAA).

Congratulations to Jo Collins & Daniel Brookes who will now both be attending Cambridge University in September.

The results for our students who followed Level 3 Vocational courses are once again excellent. In Health and Social Care eight students (Meg Birch-Machin, Blaise Dawson, James Gibson, Hannah Graham, Antonia Harrison, Charlotte Machin, Jasmine Roberts and Heather Trowell) achieved a double distinction which is equivalent to two A grades at ‘A’ Level.  In OCR Sport Oliver Mellor and Elliott Boyle also achieved this level of performance as did Simon Morrall, Anthony Goldstraw and Daniel Trueman in Business Studies.

The list of destinations for our students is no less impressive than their results, with destinations including Sheffield  (Journalism, Medicine), Liverpool (Medicine), Royal Agricultural College (Agriculture), Cambridge (Natural Science), East Anglia (English Literature & Creative Writing), Exeter (Geography), Bristol (History), Manchester (Physics and Astronomy), Cardiff (Physiotherapy, Chemistry), Derby (Product Design), York (Maths), Royal Holloway London (English, Drama), Keele (Mental Health Nursing, Law, Business Management & Marketing), De Montfort (Speech & Language Therapy), King College London (Geography), Staffs Uni (Business Management), Leeds Uni ( International Business), Durham ( Natural Science), Cambridge (Engineering), Worcester (Counselling Psychology), Nottingham (Maths), Loughborough (Automotive Engineering), Warwick (Physics, French/Italian, Biomedical Science) Birmingham (Chemical Engineering) and Aberystwyth (Fine Art).

We are absolutely delighted with these achievements and know how much hard work, good teaching and strong parental support has contributed to these successes. Many congratulations to you all.
